Indexing Error

I've recently started getting indexing error messages.
I have turned off indexing completely, as this is the only way I could find
to prevent the error messages.
If I start indexing again, will the error(s) be cleared, or must some index
files be manually deleted first?

Then again, am I better off without the indexing, and using a separate
utility, such as Agent Ransack to
do my searches?

I would like to keep the system as fast as possible.
