Windows messenger or MSN messenger ???

If its windows messenger then boot your computer in safe mode, then rename
the 'messenger' (not 'MSN messenger') folder in your program files to
something like 'DISABLED_messenger'.
reboot normally and the problem should be solved. This effectivley stops
windows messenger from functioning even when the user launches it. MSN
messenger will still function normally.

Greetings John,

Simply open up the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then Options, then
Preferences tab (General tab if using MSN Messenger 5), uncheck "Run this program when
Windows starts" (or "Run Messenger when Windows starts" if you're using MSN Messenger 5) then
click OK.

As well, do you have do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant
messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and
run it automatically. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
