I can't seem to send any files in Messenger. Could this
be because I have the Windows XP firewall activated? If
so, apart from removing the firewall, how do I solve the
problem? I'm not on a network, just a single PC user.

Greetings Pete,

Yes, with the Internet Connection Firewall enabled, you cannot send files via Messenger. To
configure the firewall to do so, Click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in
category view click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right
click your connection, then click Properties. For cable modem/broadband users, your
connection will usually be called Local Area Connection. For dialup, it should be the name of
your Internet Service Provider. Click the Advanced Tab, verify the Internet Connection
Firewall is turned on (or turn it off here, and don't bother configuring it). Then click the
Settings tab. Click the add button and then in the Service Settings, type in the following
information. For Description enter MSN Connection for Name or IP address enter 127.0.0.1,
for both External and Internal ports enter 6891. Verify TCP is selected and click OK. Now
you need to repeat the last step but changing the ports to 6892, 6893, 6894, 6895, 6896,
6897, 6898, 6899, 6900. After making all 10 (for 10 simultaneous transfers), you'll then be
able to send files.

I have this problem too. It happens with ICQ, AIM, and
Yahoo too. I don't have the XP firewall enabled. I use
Norton internet security and systemworks 2002 instead. As
far as I know all these programs have total internet
access so I don't know why I can't transfer files.

I'm also having a problem with intervideo windvr using the
titantv scheduling program that works with it. I can't
click on a show I want to record and have it program
windvr to record it, I get l"oad fail" messages all the
time and intervideo can't tell me why. So is there
anything else besides the built in firewall that can
interfere with file transfers?
