View Full Version : Messenger Audio/Video Complications

I know that this issue has been addressed below, but the
solutions offered don't help me. Here's the problem:
I receive audio from other people, but they can not
receive audio or video from me. I have tried multiple
users with the same results. I can hear them, but they
don't hear me. I can even see myself in the PIP, but
they can't see me. I can hear them through my speaker
headset.
I have an IBM PC camera, and Labtec Axis 712 USB headset
w/ speaker/mic combo. The hardware works fine on other
applications.
I went through the audio tuning wizard. Everything works-
sound, microphone, video. The devices are set up
properly: IBM PC Camera for video, Labtech Headset for
microphone and speakers. The microphone is close enough
to me for it to pick up, and it registers appropriately.
I went through my network connections, and there is no
firewall enabled.
My version of windows messenger is 4.7
I am running an IP address established by DHCP
If anyone has any suggestions, I would REALLY appreciate
it. I can't figure it out, even though it seems like
such a simple problem.

Greetings Steven,
Could you be a little more specific about your network configuration? Routers, Internet
Connection Sharing, which ISP etc.?
I have a feeling that you probably would've included those in your message, so I won't go on
about those specific issues -- out of curiosity, has this worked before in the past?

Thanks for responding.
I'm running the program through my home computer via a
Comcast cable internet connection. I don't have any
other computers connected for networking, and I am not
sharing the connection with anyone.
It is a new computer that I just set up about a month
ago. I just bought the headset. I haven't had windows
messenger audio or video work on this computer, but the
sound and video worked on my laptop without a problem
(although the mic was different). I bought the new mic
because the old one broke. It is a USB connected
headset, which is different than in the past, but like I
said, it is read in the audio tuning wizard without a
problem. Let me know if I can give more specifics that
would help.

Hi Steven,
Comcast should be fine, so should a USB headset (especially if it works in the wizard).
Since this is a new PC, I doubt you've installed ZoneAlarm or some other firewall (check Add
or Remove Programs in the Control Panel to be sure something else might've installed a
software firewall).
You could also check to make sure the Internet Connection Firewall is in fact off (although
realistically it shouldn't be causing a problem), To do so, click Start, enter
"services.msc", and then in Services, go down to the "Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) /
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" and make sure that the service isn't started -- I know in
some rare occasions the checkboxes say it isn't, but it is loaded.
I know you've tried with multiple people, but although not typical, it's possible they're all
having a problem (since they appear not to be receiving your audio/video, which may indicate
that they're the ones blocking your incoming data). You might want to check with them, just
to see if they're using routers, firewalls, and if they've had experiencing talking to others
(recently).
Finally, if you haven't already done so, upgrade Drivers, etc. at WindowsUpdate:

I did install McAffee firewall service for a trial when I
got my computer, but it slowed down my system
excessively, so I removed it using their uninstall. I
can't see that it has any residual files on add/remove
programs. There is a product called boradjump client
foundation installed, but I don't know what that is, or
if it is related to other programs, so I don't want to
remove it. I don't see any other potential problem
programs.
I found the ICF in services.msc. It has nothing marked,
and says it is manually started, and has a local access
logon. The properties show it as stopped.
I'll check to see if they have a firewall, but I highly
doubt it. They wouldn't have purchased it, and I don't
think they are running off servers who require a firewall.
I will download the new updates, but it doesn't show a
need for any drivers.
If you come up with any other possibilities, please let
me know.
Thank you
