In Windows XP How do you go about changing Icons, say for gif's or
jpg's or even exe's??
Also type msconfig in run box brings up 'System Config Utility'
going to 'startup' in turn brings up a list of programs that auto
start I have disabled some of them and some are no longer on my
computer how do I get rid of the ones no longer on my
system???????????

You can adjust the icons for a file type in the Explorer >Tools >
Folder Options > File Types. Highlight the type you want to change,
then click Advanced > Change Icon.

An automatic application start can be defined here:
- the WIN.INI, section [windows], entries "run=" and "load="
- the Registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices
- the folders
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\{username}\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
Delete the unwanted entries from these locations.

The ones that are disabled on your system are stored in the Registry. Click
Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder
Each disabled entry will be in a subkey of one of the two branches above.
See www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 148, Clear Disabled Items
From MSConfig Startup, for a small VB Script utility that will scan for
these items, show you what's disabled, and allow you to selectively remove
them.
