Greetings,
There has been an upsurge in some Messenger (that is .NET Messenger) spam this past month.
This conversation did go through the Messenger server, but you may not be aware that anyone
can actually send you a message through the .NET Messenger network without being on your
contact list. For example, if you right-click your Messenger icon, choose "Send an Instant
Message", the Other tab, you can actually type in a Passport e-mail address and send a
message to them, without being on their contact list.
However, you can change this behavior, so that people will have to add your to their contact
lists before they can send you a message (note, if it's arriving using the 'group' method of
Messenger spam, this will only block the group spam in MSN Messenger 5), open up the main
Messenger window, click Tools, then Options, then the Privacy tab, click 'All other users'
(or 'All users' in MSN Messenger 5) and then click the Block >> button.

I too am just sick to death of unwanted ads/spam coming
from people I don't even have on my list. Surely there
must be something that can be done to stop it. If I
accept any requests to have them added to my contacts
then block them, I still get spammed as soon as I logon
to Messenger. I have also had tons of spam from MSN ads
into my BT email account which is extemely annoying.
Blank emails are being sent to me, probably others too
and it just isn't on.I have Messenger v 4.7. Where can I
download v 5?

Hi,
You can find MSN Messenger 5 here:
http://messenger.msn.com/download/download.asp?client=1.
However, this won't solve any of those problems listed in your message. As far as I know,
most of these spam situations that you've described regarding this newsgroup and Messenger
has primarily stopped -- it's just the "advertisements" that still remain.

Also, If I try to reply to these spammers, it days my
message cannot be delivered, yet they aren't on my list.
Very infuriating!
