View Full Version : temporary internet files clog up
Kurt
December 24th 03, 03:06 PM
Under XP, re-installed installed about six months ago,
there are two main users, and one guest account. Recently
the partition upon which XP is put, is getting nearly
full. (9GB!). Appartently it is the directory of the
temporary internet files under my private account that is
causing this. It is now well over 5GB big and still
growing. Whant I cannot find in that directory is the
usual I.E.5.1 directory with the 4 subdirectories that
windows makes itself. In fact I cannot see anything at
all. Looking in properties tells me there are 26
subdirectories and well over 120.000 files. Trying to
change the directory from read-only does not work. Norton
AV will search it for virusses and tell me the names of
the directories. They seem the kind Windows would make.
Trying to acces the directory in a DOS environment does
not work either. I can get to the directory, but I cannot
do anything with it. Oddly enough, every now and again,
one or some files of the directory will show up, and I can
delete those. This happens very irregular and
unpredictable.
How do I get rid of this file, and how do I get a proper
working 'Temporary internet files' directory? If the
problem does not get solved quickly, I'm afraid the whole
partition will fill up and become useless.
Thanks for any help or ideas.

Open a Command Prompt to that folder, and then open Task Manager to End Task on
Explorer. Change to the command prompt window, and delete the file. Restart
Windows.

This does not work, as under prompt, the system replies
not to be able to locate the file.

With the <user directory>\T.I.F. subdirectory selected, the ADDRESS
box should list something along these lines...
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\Docs
Make it read as follows...
C:\Documents and Settings\Howard\My Documents\Docs\Content.IE5
Press <enter>
Now the usual four subdirectories should be visible. They may have
subdirectories containing the files that you want to delete...and deletion
of those subs may now be possible. It was here.

Seems like a very reasonable thing to do. Feel a bit
ashamed not to have thought of that one myself. however!
I tried it and Windows started hanging on the task. Now I
cannot even access the internet options no more. The file
is still as huge as before. I will restart the system now
and see what happens.

Windows is not hanging -- it just will take a while to delete the files. Hit
delete files, check include offline content and go fix lunch, take a shower, go
for a jog, watch a dvd :)

Now I should really feel ashamed. Your idea actually did
the trick. I only did not wait long enough for the file
to delete. t took about 10 minites before they were
gone. Funny thing is, as I log on to the internet, I can
see all new entries, but the 5 or more GB that were there
from before remained unvisible. Now they are gone
however. Still I do not get to see the subdirectories
unde content IE5, but I can work on that from here.
Somebody allready made a suggestion for that.
So thanks a lot! You saved the partition from clogging up.

Thank you very much for your suggestion. i managed to get
rid of the files via internet options. But I remain
worried about the fact that I (still) cannot see the
content.IE5 directory and it's subdiraectories. If I op
en the file now in explorer, I get to see the internet
entries, but as files of the main "temporary internet
files" and I do not see any subs. I read your suggestion,
but fail to understand it. Should I start in explorer or
in prompt. Wahat is T.I.F, Where am I to find the address
box, and how can I change (make it read) different?
Thanks beforehand,

I found out about having to be patient myself, although
Gail's suggestion made me feel more comfy about it. There
is still about 10Mb I cannot get rid off. But that is so
little compared to the 5GB before. That 10Mb i probably
still somewhere in the hidden subdirectories. Dev. made
a suggestion about that, but i do not understand his
message so far. I asked for more details. I am getting
there though. So, thanks again!

No problem
You may want to create a task (either computerize or just in your head) to do a
cleanup of the TIF (temp Internet Files) on a weekly basis. Make suer you
include the Offline content. You can also clear cookies and history as well.
Other things to perform at that time -- If you use OE, Do maintenance there as
well,
Look at your Sent folder if you keep a copy, determine if any need to be
deleted, empty your deleted folder, create subfolders and move messages from the
inbox. Then go offline, go to file, folders, compact all.
Also take a look on a regular basis at your c:\windows\temp directory As long
as your are not installing programs to run from there, you are safe to
completely delete the contents of this directory (including subfolders) on a
regular basis. (you can do a search on your computer for *.tmp to see if there
are some in any other directory)
One note regarding OE -- It is recommended that you go to Tools Options and
Uncheck Compact Messages in Background if you have this checked. This is one of
the major causes of Inbox corruption due to the fact the system may try to
compact while your system is online DL messages.

NP Jerry
People are so used to the speed of computers these days that if something takes
a while it is automatically assumed the system is hanging. Maybe one day MS
will add a completion bar to this type of task so that the users know what is
happening

T.I.F. means Temporary Internet Files
Open Windows Explorer. Click the VIEW menu|TOOLBARS and verify that ADDRESS
BAR is checkmarked.
Then in the lefthand pane of Explorer select the T.I.F. subdirectory, as in
the above path.
In the address box (top-righthand corner of the Explorer window), append
"Content.IE5" to the existing path, as shown above. <enter>
The underlying directories of the Temporary Internet Files subdirectory
should then be visible.
Note: If you see no path in the address bar, click TOOLS|FOLDER
OPTIONS|VIEW and checkmark the box that reads "show full path in the address
bar".

Mind you, this is only the windows partition. All else
(programms and files) are spread over another 80Gb.
Windows alone isn't supposed to need 9Gb, even if it is XP.

Kurt, click the following address to download HDVALET ( it's free)
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,54241,00.asp
This will get rid of a pile of junk files.
when you first use it, it will tell you what it finds and how much space is
used,
then delete the check mark in test mode to remove them.

Tried it, but apparently HDValet can no longer be
downloaded for free. One must subscribe to be able to
download, and the subscripyion costs money. I will try
