View Full Version : using a television as a monitor

hello all,
i have a question which I would very much appreciate
someone taking the time to answer. Quite simply, I was
wondering, as my current monitor is getting a 'little
past its sell by date' is it possible to use an ordinary
television set as a 'makeshift' one for a little while,
and if so, how do I go about setting it up? Is it just a
question of getting the necessary cable and hooking it
up? Many thanks for your co-operation in this matter.

Greetings --
You might be able to do so if your video adapter has the
capability of converting it's normal digital output into a usable
analog television signal, has the necessary jack so that you can
connect the TV, and if you've purchased the special cabling required.
While this capability certainly exists, it seems, since you have to
ask this question, unlikely that you had the foresight to buy and
install this specialized hardware in advance.

If your machine has a high end video output card (with TV out for playing
DVD movies for instance). Then you CAN send your monitor output to the TV
screen ( you may need some setup to get that to work and may have to change
your screen resolution.)
However it is VERY UNLIKELY that the results will be satisfactory. The TV
resolution is simply too poor to made life livable when trying to read text.
I have a high end (but not HD) TV and can read the text but would not be
able to keep my eyesight if had to actually use it as a monitor!.
(sending pictures to the TV this way works fine however).

There are adapters available to do this (presupposing you do not have a vid
card with a composite out) but the cost would get you a second-hand monitor
at a thrift store - which would be much better anyway.
Tv screens are much lower resolution _and_ they are interlaced, which will
make letters strobe and be generally unreadable.
I have used computers with tvs for various things for the last 13 years but
am always thankfull to get back to monitors.
