View Full Version : sending files with MSN Messenger

Hi
I cant seem to send files using MSN Messenger 5 (except to one person -
weird!). I have a small network that connects to the net using a 3com router
(LAN Modem). Ive read something about needing uPnP but I cant seem to find
out if the 3com supports it. What can I do?

Greetings Stephen,
The 3com doesn't support UPnP. However, there may be some type of built-in support for
Messenger file transfer in the router which is kicking in when you send to one specific
person. You might be able to get it to be more consistent by placing your computer into the
DMZ of the router (see router documentation) -- although, no guarantees.

Can you suggest a router that supports UPnP?

Hi,
Basically what it does is disables the built-in firewall in the router, and any incoming
traffic (like file transfers) goes to one particular PC. As I said, if there's any sort of
built-in support for Messenger, this is usually how it's activated.

Hi Stephen,
The best (in my opinion) is the Microsoft MN-100 or MN-500:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/broadbandnetworking/products.aspx
Note that currently only MSN Messenger 5 supports UPnP file transfer (which I know you're
already using).

I use ISDN to access the net so need an ISDN router that supports UPnP.
I thought of perhaps the Diva ISDN router from Eicon.

Hi Stephen,
I don't have much experience with ISDN routers, but if you're thinking about buying a new
one, as always it's best to know the return policy before you buy.
