Since changing to XP nearly a year ago my computer has
run perfectly well. However recently the system seems to
have become sluggish and task manager often gives the not
responding message when they a program is opened
initially; but, opening task manager seems to start the
program running normally. Can anyone advise me how to
combat this please?

Hi Dan,
This slowdown *could* be attributed to the installation of a recent update -
Q811493. Check in Add & Remove for it and uninstall it to see if things
improve. Some users have also had a problem with the installation of SP1a,
there is a fix available here:
Windows XP SP1 Heap Algorithm Update for Atypically Large Heap Requests
