View Full Version : Is it corrupted?

I wonder if someone can help? I am trying to open an
Excel file on my PC from a floppy disc.
The file was created and saved on the same machine that I
am trying to open it on. The file has been accessed
since it was created.

Other files open ok from the same disc. But when I try
and open this one the drive continuously runs and I have
to close it using the task manager where it kindly
informs me that the file/disc/program is not responding.

This is fairly important info and I need to access it
ASAP.

Hope someone can help

Thanks!!

NEVER ever save to, and open files directly from, a floppy (or any removable
media) if you care about the data. If you remove the disk before the system
has completely finished writing to it then, 99 times out of 100, you can
kiss the file goodbye. Sounds like that's exactly what's happened in this
case. If so, the data is gone. You should always save the file to the hard
drive and then copy across to the floppy. If you need to edit the file, copy
it back to the hard drive, make your changes, save it to the hard drive and
then copy it back to the floppy.

Try copying it to the hard drive. If it won't copy successfully, then you
can safely assume it's corrupt and you'll have to pray that someone has a
copy on a hard drive. If not, you've just learnt a valuable lesson.

The same is true for any removable media, not just floppies.

Also try opening the file in word, I managed to rescue an Excel file that
way.
That may restore the raw values, but formulas are long gone.
