Windows Messenger automatically starts on my Windows XP
box. I never use it or anything since I use AIM for IM
and chat, etc. (1) Is it safe to not start it - is there
other O/S functions like windows update depending on it?
(2) If safe to not start it, how can I do that? Thanks so
much for your help!

Greetings,
A few functions do require Messenger to be installed, but not running (if it requires it, it
will start itself).
You can stop it from running by opening up the main Messenger window, click Tools, Options,
Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this program when Windows starts'.
