I read that XP automatically detects win98 and offers a
dual boot menu. I have a fresh install of WIN98SE on a
brand new hard drive and academic version XP fresh install
on 2nd partition but after the install and the restart
nothing happens. Just get a Missing Operation system
messasge. Does the academic version have anything to do
with this?

Boot to CD Recovery Console (first 'repair' option offered), and run the
'fixboot' and 'bootcfg' utilities.
