I have WinXp Home installed on a new Dell. I have all the current
updates and patches including SP1a.

My computer kept polling my dialup connection and was receiving 525
bytes of data over and over and over.

It turned out to be SSDP Discovery Service. This really frosts me,
since this was supposed to be solved a long time ago and it took me
hours and hours to figure out. No wonder my friends tell me to bag
WinXP and instal Win98SE.

I tried to use a patch from Microsoft and it said since I had SP 1
installed, it couldn't. The Knowledge Base Article said it would be
fixed in the Service Pack. It wasn't.

If you are interested and notice your computer is d/l something, but not
really slowing you down, you should read this stuff.

Steve Gibson has a little utility that shuts SSDP Discover Service off
and on, called UnPlugn'Pray or just do it in Services.

Anyway, here are the links...

So what, SSDP is not allowed on the public network. Your ISP's router =
drops it.
