Take a look at Steve Winograd's excellent article about file sharing in XP:

Hi,

Ok, do you have a crossover cable connected between both
computers? A CAT5e Crossover Cable with two male RJ45
conectors, if not that could be the problem. An RJ45 LAN
Cable is not the same, it must be a crossover cable...

Is it a wireless set up? Is a network Hub involved? Is
the cable defective?

Do you have IP addresses assigned (they should be
different) to the (NIC's) Lan cards?
192.168.0.1 is the address for one computer and for the
other 192.168.0.2 w/subnet mask 255.255.255.0 on both
machines. Then just set up the protocals the same for
both computers in LAC # Properties. You might have to
turn both computers completely off and then on again to
make connection.
