View Full Version : "No media" when trying to burn a CD-R or RW

Hi all,

I cannot write any CD's on my win XP, whatever I do or whatever program
I use, I'm told there's is no CD in the drive( I've tried different
ones, R as well as RW). Reading CD-s is no problem, and the drive is
recognized correctly and said to be working properly.

I found this:

"The following error message may occur when you try to write to a CD-R
or CD-RW if the driver is corrupted:

There is no disc in the drive. Please insert a writable CD into drive.
If the device driver has been corrupted, see the HCL to determine if
the driver that is listed for the drive on the HCL is compatible with
Windows XP. If you are using a driver from the manufacturer of the
drive and not the driver that is supplied by Microsoft, make sure that
you have the driver available. You may need to remove the driver and
reinstall it if it has become corrupted.

To remove and reinstall the device driver for the CD-R drive or the
CD-RW drive:
1.. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.. If Control Panel is in Category view, click Performance and
Maintenance, and then click System.

-or-

If Control Panel is in Classic view, double-click System.
3.. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
4.. Click the drive that uses the driver you want to remove.
5.. On the Action menu, click Uninstall.

When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click OK.
6.. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes.
Although Microsoft does not encourage you to use of devices that are
not listed on the HCL, in some situations, you can obtain a Windows
XP-compatible driver by contacting the device manufacturer directly.
For information about how to contact your hardware manufacturer, click
the appropriate article number in the following list to view the
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
65416 Hardware and Software Third-Party Vendor Contact List, A-K

60781 Hardware and Software Third-Party Vendor Contact List, L-P

60782 Hardware and Software Third-Party Vendor Contact List, Q-Z

If you change the CD drive or the DVD drive to direct memory access
(DMA) mode from programmed input/output (PIO) mode, you may resolve
this issue."

So I reïnstalled the driver and checked IDE transfer: already on DMA.
My Drive is a Benq 40/12/48.

I have looked everywhere for a solution and found a lot of people with
the same problems, but NO solutions ( apart from the one above that
does NOT help) at all. This has never happened to me before, I can
usually quicly find a solution for even the strangest problem on the
net. But not this one??? Why is that??

Hi,

Right-click the drive in "My Conmputer", select properties. Go to the
recording tab, is the box enabling recording with this device checked?

Do you perhaps have Nero Burning Rights installed? If so, you might
deinstall it or add the appropriate users to the database. I'd
deinstall it. OTOH, it should give you a more descriptive message if it
prevents burning.

Hi Willem,

Did it work previously? With what burning software? Have you checked for a
firmware update?

Tried all updates etc, no dice

I've just come off the Benq hotline, they say the drive is defective,
even though it's brand new. Well, we'll see...

Obviously, I now (temporarily) have a Philips drive in there that works
without any problems, with the built-in XP CD support at that ( The
Nero version I got with the BenQ only wants to work with BenQ
drives).Thanks for listening anyway...
