Everytime I open outlook expres, windows messenger starts
up without showing any popup or icon. When I open
taskmanager (im using xp home edition dutch version) I
can see msmsgs.exe is running and people can see my
online sttus without me even seeing i'm logged in with
messenger.
There is no opotion in the tab general options in outlook
express to disable messenger from starting up.
How can i solve this so i'm getting to control the
startup of messenger?
Thanks al lot.

Hi,
Take a look at Doug Knox's Website at this link for detailed instructions on
how to disable your Windows Messenger or to disable it from starting up at
startup.

Sorry, just noticed that your post said that you're using Windows XP Home,
and the instructions from that site are only for Windows Xp Pro users.
My apologies,

Greetings Ralph,
To stop this from occurring, simply download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg
You'll need to restart Outlook Express to see the change.

Good morning. I'm running XP Pro, and have also been
trying to diable Windows Messenger 4.7 from automatically
running at startup. I've unchecked all appropriate check
boxes in Messenger and in Outlook, and have changed my
settings as noted in Doug Knox's link below to disable
the automatic starting of Messenger. However, Messenger
is STILL trying to load at startup. Any other
suggestions?

Hi Andrew,
Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and start it up
automatically. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon
in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
