hey,
im trying to open a *.wps file that just has text in it, which i hear is a
works file. I have dumb Windows Office XP, and went to their site and
installed the 13 meg file converter add-in(totally worthless btw). It wont
stinking open. when i try to open it with microsoft word it says i need to
install a converter, so i click yes and then it wants the stupid xp cd
(PROPLUS.MSI) which i put in and browse to that stupid file...and it gibs.
it says its not the right file for the job. BAH!
what can i open the dumb *.wps file with? i just need to open it and save
the text as a normal document.

I do have that software and maybe send me the file and can send
it back to you, or you can always go to kaaza.com

I am not trying to be snotty, but alot of people won't reply
when you crosspost. Also I will not tell you that you
should post this to an office newsgroup and this is an XP
Operating System group.

Open Word, and in the file types try 'recover text from any
file'

This is not a Windows XP question, but I'll take a stab at it. If
you have Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage, you have
to run updates from an administrative install point. The MSI file
would be the one at that administrative install point if you have
applied SP1 or SP2 to that Office XP version.

You posted in a lot of newsgroups and it appears that none of them
is one of the Office newsgroups. Your question has nothing to do
with any of the groups in which you posted. If you go to the
correct group, you might find the answer without even having to ask
the question.

One other avenue available is to have the originator of the file to
save it in whatever version of Word that Works will save as. Word
2002 will reach all the way back to Version 6 .0 of Word.

Open WORD, then click on the open file folder on the menu
bar, then browse to the WPS file. It should open.

It has to install the converter before it can convert the
file.

WORKS uses a different coded to save files, so the converter
translates the code.

Aaron, try this: In Word's Open dialog box choose "Recover text from any
file" from the "Files of Type" dropdown list. You'll end up with a bunch of
extraneous format characters besides the original text but that should get
you within reach of that file's contents.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The .wps file was edited by the Software WPS office . It is a work of
Kingsoft In China.
You should have a wps reader to open the file.
of If you trust me. You may send me the file and i convert it to .doc .

Actually - proplus.msi is an office file - not windows. Try installing
office CD at this point - not windows co.

have fun

Sometimes you have to poke around and try selecting different folders. When
you get the right one, the proplus.msi file should be visible. Select the
folder, not the file. Click OK.

hmmm. yeah, but the actual proplus file is just in the core directory. i
browse to it and select the actual file in the install program as well. is
it somewhere else on the cd as well?

Which version of Microsoft Office are you using?

Aaron, I've never been able to select the file directly when faced with a
similar prompt and have it install successfully. I've had to backtrack to
select the folder the file resides in. If it's the root folder (core
directory as you call it), then I would select the drive's letter and leave
it at that.

Another way to tackle this problem would be to run setup again. Use the
Add/Remove Components option from the setup screen. Drill down to convertors
and filters and select them to be added to your Office installation.
