View Full Version : Disabling Windows Messenger

The Doug Knox solution to disabling Windows Messenger is
for XP Pro. How can a Xp Home Edition user disable
Windows Messenger. I did the Start,Control Panel,Add or
Remove Programs,Add/Remove Windows Components and
unchecked Messenger and clicked next. But if I click on
the icon it still opens. I would prefer not to remove it
in case I want to use MSN Messenger someday, I don't want
to disable functions in MSN Messenger. Thanks for your
help.

Greetings,
To disable Windows Messenger, so all functions still function, open up the main Messenger
window, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program when Windows
starts'. This won't stop it from being loaded by some other application though. As well, you
can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove
Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list and click
Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack 1 -- if you
haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
Finally, if you're using Outlook Express, download and run this .reg file to stop Outlook
Express from loading Windows Messenger:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

HI thanks for the reply. I have Windows Messenger 4.7 and
I don't see the option "Run this program when windows
starts" I had it in a previous version and unchecked it
then. I did the other thing(through Add/Remove Windows
Components) and if I click on the Messenger icon it still
opens and logs me on. Any ideas? Thanks BSloan

Hi,
Instead, simply run msconfig (click Start, then Run, enter "msconfig" and click OK), then
click the Startup tab, uncheck the 'msmsgs' entry and click OK. As well, do you have Norton
Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning" feature to Norton
Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and display this behavior. To stop it,
open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

HI, Thanks again. I must have not been clear. Windows
Messenger does not start at Startup. But after trying to
disable it, it still works if I open it. My Nefew(?) has
a screen on my computer, and he will probably want to use
this service. I would however like to drop it from my
side. If I go to the Adminitrative icon and drop my
passport can he still use it on his side. And, my
original problem was his login was on my side. By having
my own Passport and linking it to my user account, his
sign-up went to his side. If I delete my passport will
his sign-up stay on his side or come back to mine?
Also, not having a BBQ today Jonathan? Thanks BSloan

Hi,
Sorry about that.
If you disable Windows Messenger on your account (you can) so it can't load, applications
which try to load Messenger will "freeze" for a number of minutes as they try to load
Messenger (the most common one being Outlook Express, which you can stop this from occurring
by using the .reg file I pointed to in an earlier post). To stop Windows Messenger
completely from loading on your account, just download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/disablewindowsmessenger_user.reg
Just completely close Messenger and (attempt) to restart it, the changes should take effect
immediately.
Yes, you can remove your Passport information from your Administrator account as well (click
the Start Button, then click the Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control
Panel. Select your account name, and then on the left side of the screen, under Related
Tasks, click 'Manage my Network Passwords', then click each name denoted by (Passport) and
click 'Remove' to each -- including Passport.Net\*) , Windows Messenger will still continue
to run on your nephew's Windows XP user account, and he shouldn't have any problems (Passport
accounts don't move around).
Oh, and no BBQ here today =).

Hi, Thanks again. Thanks for the spelling help, I just
could not remember how to spell nephew. I ran the .reg
file to prevent Messenger from loading when I open
Outlook Express. Thanks for that tip. If I run the
other .reg file will this prevent my nephew from using
Windows Messenger as well? I have dropped my passport and
the Passport.net/*. Both sides now ask for a sign on. I
have dropped the Messenger icon from my side as well.
Also, can my nephew still use the automatic sign on on
his side, since I have deleted Passport.net/*? Thanks

Hi,
The disablewindowsmessenger_user.reg file will only disable it on your account, it will
continue to work on your nephew's without a problem. As well, removing Passport.Net\* on
your account has no effect on his -- they're completely separate, so yes, he'll be able to
set up an automatic Passport signin on his account.
