Renewing IP address

I just got a new laptop but cannot connect to internet via
network adapter (cable internet). The problem is that I
get an error every time I try to renew the IP address:
unable to contact DCHP server. I have tried releasing and
renewing from the command prompt, I downloaded wntipcfg
for XP, and I tried installing the cable modem software
onto the notebook. No luck anywhere. Do I have any other
options?

Go to your ISP's web site or check your paperwork. Look for technical
support and see how they set up the connection. It could be that a
username/password and/or MAC Address is used for authentication.
You may want to Search the built-in Help and Support for PPPOE or check this
