i recently had a lot of problems with my pc. i had turned
off the system restore feature to remove a virus and
prevent it from returning in restore files according to
instructions i had. i forgot to enable system restore
afterwards and shut the pc down for the day. i later
realized that ALL my previous restore points, including
the very first when the pc was new and first booted, are
gone.
Q: would the use of the WinXP disc be the only way to
rturn to any earlier condition?
i use the incredimail program to send/receive email from
my webmail account. sudden authorization problems that
prevented access to email led me to decide to uninstall
incredimail. the icons were gone but the program file
folder and others were still visible in the pc. in
addition, when i attempted to re-download the program, it
told me incredimail was open and couldn't be closed
because the install.log file was missing. so, i used
RegClean (offered by jv16.org)and attempted to delete the
files. the automatic cleaning supposedly did this,
however the program was still listed in the Registry
Cleaner's Software list, as well as the list of programs
that could be Uninstalled...so I deleted them directly
from there too.
Presumably all this activity had affected other files on
the pc because then the system said files for Outlook
Express and the Calculator and so on could not be found,
so I restored the back ups, uninstalled the registry
cleaner and decided to run REGEDIT.
In HKEY, Local Machine, Software I found an Incredimail
folder and deleted it with all its subfolders.
After doing this I was able to download the Incredimail
program again.
Now, i am a bit worried about all this meddling that i
seemed to have done from the point of lost system restore
points, several attempts to uninstall and reinstall
several programs, and messing with the registry. a
minimal scan of the registry by Registry Mechanic which I
downloaded from CNet keeps on revealing errors that need
repair, no matter how many times in sequence i run the
program and click repair.
Although the system appears to be stable so far, is there
any reason to worry about the registry...and the fact
that i have no reliable restore points????
HELP PLZ! I need answers :S
