This might be a stupid question but does XP Home come with a 'Back up'
programme?

I have checked in the 'Search' programme but it does not show up and the
'Help' does not tell me anything.

How do others back up their files etc.?

Many thanks for any help which can be given

Dave

David:
Look here:

If windows XP is OEM, you may or may not have the files.
In that case you need a 3rd party application if you want back-up
features.

I use Briefcase to backup my notebook to an external harddrive. It works
great.

I'm a fanatic about backing up!

First, I have moved as many as possible of of my personal settings into My
Documents, centralizing much of the data and settings I want backed up
regularly.

Every day (six days a week) I synchronize My Documents to a Briefcase file
(on the external drive) labelled that particular day of the week. So at any
given time I have backup files of My Documents for each day of the past
week.

I also have a Briefcase file for every month of the year. Each month I back
up My Documents to the corresponding Briefcase file on my external drive.
This way I have a backup of each month's data for the previous twelve
months.

Once a month I copy my entire C: drive to the external drive using Sony
Retrospect. I rename the previous backup to "Old copy of C" and create a new
backup named "New copy of C." So I always have two months of the entire C:
drive backed up.

Also once a month I copy My Documents to a CD (using Sony CD Extreme) and
store it away from my work station, so in the event of a fire I could only
lose a month's work at most.

All my backups are exact duplicates of the originals, folder to folder, file
to file, not crunched into a "backup" file like a lot of software wants to
do. This way I can go to my backup copies and find any particular file I may
want to copy back onto my notebook.

This may sound tedious, but I've made it part of my routine and it's really
no big deal. I have been burned too many times by losing important data.
This "leap frog" approach to backing up gives me a pretty good sense of
security.
