View Full Version : Changing the timing of wm popus...

Juan
December 5th 03, 01:48 PM
Hello,

Sometimes I miss the popups that appear on the bottom-
right corner of my display (b/c I may be away for a few),
but I do hear them. Then, when I run back to the PC, the
popup has disappear. sometimes I see it fading away as I
get closer....

How do I change the length of time the popups stay
visible? Or, alternately, how do I view past alerts?
According to the MS KB, "windows messenger" should have
tabs where I should be able to review the alerts
(popups), but I have only seen those "tabs" on MSN
messenger. I have both wm 4.7 & msnm 5.0 installed on my
xp-pro system.

Thanks in advance,

Juan

Greetings Juan,

Unfortunately you can't change the timing the popups -- in fact there are no options for
them.

What the KB is referring to is the .NET Alerts -- on the Alerts tab in Messenger, these
aren't the notifications that people have come online -- these are the alerts that you sign
up for at http://alerts.microsoft.com.

Thank you, Jonathan

Those are exactly the alerts I'm referring to. I signed
for traffic alerts & breaking news through .NET Alerts
and would simply like some way of re-viewing them in case
I missed them the first time around.

You're right about the tabs, but they only appear on the
MSN Messenger, not the Windows Messenger. I have WM set
to automatically sign me in with Windows (for my .NET
Alerts) figuring that MSN-M would allow me to connect as
a different user for IM without losing the .NET Alerts
I've signed up for.

Now, if both WM and MSN-M are providing me the same
functionality (since they both pop-up whenever I receive
an alert), it shouldn't matter which one I use, right??
Well, that's what I though, at least, until I found that
the only way to review past alerts was through the Alerts
tab which only exists in the MSN messenger 5.0; WM 4.7
does not even have that option in the Tools menu.

So back to my original issue. If I have the MSN plug-in
installed for WM (which I do), and I can only review my
alerts through MSN-M, then I should have MSN-M
automatically connect with Windows instead of WM...(?)

I guess if I dig enough I can wonder: if WM is designed
to be used by the OS so that IT can add corporate alerts
within their network and allow corporate IM-ing, why
would the viewing of received alerts only be available
through the MSN-M (which is designed for the mainstream
user)? Or am I just confused about which messenger is
for what purpose?

Thanks again,

Juan

Hi Juan,

The .NET Alert tab does exist in Windows Messenger -- to turn it on, just click Tools, Show
Tabs, and Microsoft .NET Alerts. If that isn't available, click the Tools menu, then
Options, then Privacy tab, verify that "this is a shared computer, so don't show my tabs" is
unchecked, click OK, sign off, then back on and try again.

The MSN Add-In actually isn't required for .NET Alerts -- .NET Alerts is not a MSN Service,
it's a Microsoft .NET service. As such, it's available in both clients. There is no such
thing as "corporate alerts" (at least not presently) for Messenger -- both clients are
designed for the mainstream -- MSN being the one for MSN services, and Windows Messenger for
access to Windows based technologies like Exchange and custom Communication Services
(Greenwich/RTC Server).

Hi Jonathan,

It worked, thanks. Now I have the same alerts
functionality on both MSN messenger and Windows
Messenger. Although you briefly explained it, would you
mind expanding on when I would use one messenger over the
other?

As far as I can tell, the only advantage of having both
messenger programs is that I could have two separate
sessions going (one for my .NET Alerts and the other one
to allow any of the other PC users to IM & check their
own email without having to subscribe to the same .NET
Alerts for each user).

Now that I chagned the privacy settings on WM, I can get
my .NET Alerts through either messenger, so I'm not sure
I truly understand the differences between both messenger
programs and how specifically I could use one over the
other...

Thanks again. I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but
you've truly help me understand so far, so I hope you
don't mind :)

Juan

Hi Juan,

At this point the differences between the two are quite small, some like the MSN Messenger 5
over Windows Messenger better simply because it has support for UPnP file transfer, has an
option to "View Offline Contacts in a Group", better Messenger spam protection yet others
prefer Windows Messenger 4.x, simply because they need the SIP/RTC support, Exchange support
(in the Exchange version) or simply don't want to see advertisements.

The changes in the next versions coming up (MSN Messenger 6 and Windows Messenger 5) will be
much more apparent (they're both still in beta, so the featuresets aren't really stabilized
yet enough to talk about both, although see:
http://messenger.msn.com/support/sneakpeek.asp for MSN Messenger 6 info).

Realistically, you can use whichever one you want, depending on your needs (although many
people, including myself, use it to simply have to accounts signed in at once). Like I said
earlier, .NET Alerts are a Microsoft .NET technology, just like .NET Messenger (the network
both MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger connect to), whereas Hotmail is a MSN technology,
and therefore is in MSN Messenger (minus any Add-Ins in Windows Messenger) and Windows
Messenger has an emphasis on Windows-based technologies, like Exchange and RTC Server's
(Greenwich) running on Windows Server 2003.

Glad to be of assistance =).
