See this page for an explanation of the differences between the two
programs.

How are MSN Messenger and Windows® Messenger different?

Greetings Joe,

Windows Messenger is the built in Messenger client in Windows XP. MSN Messenger (5) is a
separate Messenger client with some newer features (but in order for all the features to work
properly, Windows Messenger must remain installed).

You can use whichever one you want (try them both to see which one you prefer), but if you
just want to keep one, the easiest method is just to remove MSN Messenger 5. To do so, click
Start, then Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs, click MSN Messenger 5 and then click
Remove.

If you want to use MSN Messenger 5, disable Windows Messenger 4.7, by opening it up, click
Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this program when Windows starts'. This
won't stop it from being loaded by some other application though. As well, if you have
Windows XP SP1 installed, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or
Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the
components list and click Next >. This won't remove Windows Messenger, but it will let it
stay out of your way, and allow you to install MSN Messenger 5 without loosing any
functionality.

And no, Messenger will only support Hotmail.com or MSN.com accounts.
