I have a compaq laptop computer running on XP. My problem
that I am having is that everytime I run any program the
fan fluctuates from high speed to medium speed every few
seconds. This causes the computer to lock up or makes it
run extremely slow every time the fan kicks in on high.
It's very agravating when your trying to navigate on the
internet or when trying to run games or other programs.
How can I determine what is causing this to happen or to
fix this problem?

Please help!

Is the computer under warranty? If so, contact HP/Compaq tech support.

Otherwise I can't help you since I wouldn't purchase a Compaq under any
circumstances. Too proprietary.

Since it is small (laptop) try running in a cold environment to determine if
heat is the problem. Some computers control the fan speed and also cut the
clock speed to reduce the duty cycle of the CPU.
