View Full Version : messenger 6: video works (slowly) voice doesn't

i'm behind a uPnP enabled router. linksys befsx41. i
tried to use windows messenger 4.7 and msn messenger 5.0
but voice/video didn't work. just sending and recieving
files. now, i switched to msn messenger 6.0. i managed to
get my webcam to work through it, also sending and
receiving files (if 2nd person has messenger 6 also).
video works very slow, altough both persons are on
bandwidth connection (1mbit/256kbits), but voice doesn't
work. how come?

so, i have only 2 questions about this:

- why doesn't voice work
- is video slow, because messenger 6 is still on beta
stage and is using another database for this?

thanks and best regards,

Gregor

Greetings Gregor,

The default video support in MSN Messenger 6 (the Webcam button), is the same/similar to the
MSN Messenger 5 Logitech webcam support (http://messenger.msn.com/support/webcam.asp) -- the
reason why it's so slow, is because you're not connecting directly. In fact your video is
going to a central server, and the other person is viewing it that way. If a direct
connection can be established, it would go much faster.

As well, the voice isn't working, because it is the same as previous Messenger versions (in
fact is exactly the same technology), which is why you're seeing the same problem.

From my knowledge of your previous posts, is it possible that your contact is the one
experiencing the problems?

As a sidenote, file transfer has also been changed, but I won't get into the technical
specifics about it right now.

Regards Jonathan,

VIDEO: thank you for understanding the fact, this is
going over the central server. so, for direct connection,
i need to use the other function (start video
conference?). though i have upnp enabled on my computer
and router, it doesn't work. do i need to forward ports
on my "default internet gateway"? what ports? same as in
version 5?

- file transfer: 6891 - 6900 (TCP)
- audio/video: 5004 - 65535 (UDP)

AUDIO: my contact isn't the one experiencing problems.
the problem is by my side. though, we have the same
routers (linksys- upnp enabled). could you tell me more,
on why also this doesn't work. all settings are the same
as he has them.

FILES: thank you. i won't ask for more about the
technical specifications

just to let you know, there is only one thing that isn't
the same.. i'm access the router thrugh switch, but i
don't think this is the main problem.

thank you again for helping me out. just to tell you,
this is the only place where i can proove everything
could work just fine, so i can convince my father to use
messenger as netmeetings with other companies...

thanks and best regards,

Hi Gregor,

Actually it will attempt to make a direct connection, but if it fails, uses the server.
That's why I think something is blocked on your/contacts' end.

Start Video Conference does use UPnP, but you shouldn't have to forward any ports (that's why
it's UPnP).

I'd be interested to hear your results from your other post today, it should at least make it
much easier to solve the problem.

Try a video conference instead of webcam conversation.
