View Full Version : 2 nd User Can't Get to E-Mail or Chat From Messenger

Hi Jonathan, You were a great help to me this weekend.
One more thing please. I removed my passport name and the
Passport.net/* from my User Account area. Now my nephew
can't access his e-mail or the chat rooms from Messenger.
I have the Add-in downloaded but it still will not let
him get e-mail of chat. Is there a way to get this
function without my being bothered by Windows Messenger?
Also, he says that now each time he goes back to his
account with MSN.com to check his e-mail he has to re-
type his password. He didn't have to before all the
changes I made. He says it's no big deal, but if there's
an easy fix I will do it for him. Thanks BSloan

Greetings,

This is usually caused by an obsolete cookie on his Windows XP account. To fix, under his
Windows XP account, just open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then Internet Options,
then click the Delete Files button, and when that's complete click the Delete Cookies button.
Then, it should work. As a sidenote, just double-check that the date/time is correct
(double-click the click in the corner of the screen), as that would also cause this to
happen.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for the reponse. It's not a left over
Windows XP cookie. I cleared everything and he still
could not get to chat or e-mail from the Messenger on his
side. I have the Add-in for that, but for some reason we
can't check it now. Should I go to Add/Remove Windows
Components and re-check Windows Messenger's box. He
doesn't mind not getting to e-mail of chat, but if I can
fix it for him I don't mind. Thanks Brian

Hi Brian,

Remember you have to remove the cookies on his Windows XP account, what you do on your
account, really has no effect. Yes, if you unchecked Windows Messenger in Add/Remove, you
should put it back. As well, is just nothing happening when you try to turn on the Add-In?

Hi Jonathan, I will re-check Windows Messenger in
Add/Remove. Yes, nothing happens when we try to check the
MSN Add-in. The funny part is, when I had the Messenger
on my side as well, I could uncheck the MSN Add-in but he
could not. Now we can't get it to check on his side. Oh,
I did delete the files and cookies on his side. I do that
everytime before I shut him down and switch to me. I have
him on the "Guest" screen, does this make any difference?

Hi Brian,

Yes, the Add-In doesn't work on the Guest account. Instead, why not make him his own account
(click Start, then Control Panel, User Accounts, click Create a new Account, and follow the
wizard). You can make him a Limited User account, so he won't be able to install anything,
and really won't be able to effect the computer, but will be able to save some files for
himself, etc. This may also solve a number of problems he's having, the Guest account really
is restrictive.
