I'd like to know how come when I've set Messenger not to
automatically start up when I go into Outlook Express and
when the settings within Messenger itself have been set
not to autostart but wait till I want to logon to
messenger, how come all these offensive spammers know I'm
online and message me asking to come to their website?
This is highly irritating. All other users have been
blocked from within Messenger and still this happens. Is
the only alternative to simply create a new account and
start from scratch? Also where did all these spammers
get my email address from (its hotmail).

Greetings,
To stop Messenger from loading with Outlook Express, first close Outlook Express, then simply
download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg
You can then restart Outlook Express.
Most likely they didn't get your e-mail address, they use dictionaries which "guess" at
Hotmail e-mail addresses -- since they're so common it's easy for them to get lucky. As
well, if you've ever tried to opt-out of one of them, most likely you were put on an "active"
list.
With All other users blocked, you will be able to block them, but they're using a new "group"
method which can get around this. MSN Messenger 5's "All users" (same as All other users)
option defeats the group method, so you may want to consider using MSN Messenger instead:
http://messenger.msn.com/download/download.asp?client=1.

So there is no way for us to stop unwanted incoming IMs from unauthorized
users via Windows Messenger 4.x? I refuse to install MSN Messenger.

Hi,
Yes there is, just simply open up the main Messenger window, click Tools, then Options, then
the Privacy tab, click 'All other users' and then click the Block >> button. The only thing
this will *NOT* block are group conversation spam, which really isn't all that usual (I
haven't seen any of it for weeks).

Hi,
Group conversation spam is when the "spammer" spams multiple people at once (for instance, if
you were to open up a conversation window, click the Invite a person to this conversation and
invite several people). In Windows Messenger, this can get around the "All other users"
block, but in MSN Messenger 5 it does not. Like I said, this method isn't that well known or
used.
