I've never had a problem with windows messenger on XP Pro
until now. I've always had it set not to load with windows
or run in the background. Now ever since I upgraded to
version 4.7 it runs in the background weather I want it to
or not. I keep find it running in my task manager after
closing it. When I click the "X" to close it, I want it to
close, not run in the background. I don't like im's
popping up when I'm in the middle of doing something else
and taking focus away from what I'm doing.

Open Windows Messenger, go to Tools -> Options and under the General tab,
uncheck the box that says "Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts". Also,
if you use Outlook Express, disable the Windows Messenger integration (Open
OE -> Tools -> Options -> Uncheck "Automatically sign in to Windows
Messenger") These two steps will stop Windows Messenger from loading when
you don't want it.

Hope this helps,

Edward, reread my post. I've had it set not to load with
windows for a long time and also not have outlook express
to log into messenger. The problem is that even though the
options in messenger are set not to load with windows and
not to run in the background when closed, it still runs in
the background. I keep getting IM's with messenger closed
and when I check in the task manager it shows it as
running on the processes page. this is version 4.7
