Hi!

I get the above message short after I installed Windows XP. I read
that the cause for this error is Windows as it shuts down too fast,
leaving some registry data in memnory.

A solution provided to me was to disable write-cache for the harddisk.
However the disk is attached to an promise ultraATA 100 controller
onboard my Asus A7V and is seen as SCSI-device - the option to disable
write-chaching is not available.

any idea on how to disable write-back cache in registry?

Thanks!

P.S: memory timings are ok as well as the latest promise drivers used

Try a boot into Safe Mode, by hitting F8 just before the "Starting
Windows" screen would appear (takes a bit of practice).
Choose LAST GOOD.

If that does nothing, use a working PC to read these sites...

How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q307545
describes a three-step process to extract a copy of the registry
from the System Restore SVI folder.

After your system is restored, the ERUNT utility available here may
make it easier to fix the problem if it recurs...

If the problem persists, try swapping current RAM (even if it checks
good) for a single, high-quality 512Mb chip. XP reportedly is sensitive
to memory timing.
