When I am logged into Windows Messenger, how can I
permanently make myself to appear off line?

Greetings,
You will stay as 'Appear Offline', until you sign off, close Messenger, etc. There is no way
to set yourself as 'Appear Offline' to your contacts when you sign in initially (although if
you don't have many contacts, you could just block them and then unblock them when you want
them to see you).

>Thanks for the reply. My problem is not with my contacts,
it is with the unauthorized contacts that spam me. I enjoy
the benefits of using the service but I don't appreciate
the spam. When I appear offline, all is well. If i could
make a change to the registry or something permanently,
problem would be solved. If it can't be done, then so be
it. Thanks again for your help.

Greetings,
You may not be aware that anyone can actually send you a message through the .NET Messenger
network without being on your contact list. For example, if you right-click your Messenger
icon, choose "Send an Instant Message", the Other tab, you can actually type in a Passport
e-mail address and send a message to them, without being on their contact list. Indeed, this
is what the spammers are exploiting.
However, you can change this behavior, so that people will have to add your to their contact
lists before they can send you a message, open up the main Messenger window, click Tools,
then Options, then the Privacy tab, click 'All other users' (or 'All users' in MSN Messenger
5) and then click the Block >> button.
