When a disc is in drive d: (dvd rom drive ) a message is displayed "please
insert a disc in drive d:". The e: cd r/w drive works fine. I'm using XP
pro. The device manager indicates the drive is working properly. Thanks.
who me?

The most likely cause is a failure in the laser electronics, or the loss of
a disk insert switch, both of which are internal to the drive and not
repairable. You most likely will have to replace the drive. The device
manager can only tell that the drive is powered and all connections
complete. It can not tell is the laser (mirrors and all) are aligned and
working nor can it tell if a small plastic switch lever is broken.

Did you right click on the CD icon and check autoplay settings?
