View Full Version : Why do I need .net to use windows messenger

I have WIN98SE and WindowsXP computers networked together.

On my 98SE machine I can start winpopup and send a msg to the other machine
using the workgroup, computer or user name. No additional logons required!

Why the hell can't I fire up windows messenger and reply from the XP machine
without first logging on to the microsoft network. Am I missing something?

I can go to a command line and use the net send command (Is this how we are
supposed to use windows messenger service in XP????) But to use a windows
application I need to get a .NET passport which I do not need - my ISP
provides an email account, thanks.

Wake up Bill. Software used to be simple and actually work!

What happened?

Greetings,

Windows Messenger is an internet instant messaging application, it has nothing to do with the
"Messenger Service/WinPopUp". Net send is the only built-in way to send messages to other
computers in the same manner you've used in the past, although there is a third-party tool
you can use instead, if you must have a GUI called LanTalk XP:
