View Full Version : Will Messenger 6.0 run side-by-side or will it upgrade Messenger 4 on Windows XP?

Hi,

As I've once installed Messenger 5 on XP, I've seen it was not intended to be an
upgrade of the one version that is shipped with Windows XP. Is it the same with
Messenger 6 - i.e. do we have to run it separately - or will it at last upgrade
versions 4.x on XP?

Thanks,
Vince C.

The program that was bundled with Windows XP is known as Windows Messenger
and is a different program then MSN Messenger. MSN Messenger 6 will not
upgrade Windows Messenger, as it is a different program. Therefore they will
run separately.

Hope this helps,

Greetings Vince,

MSN Messenger 6 will still not be an upgrade to Windows Messenger. However, like MSN
Messenger 5, in order to retain full functionality (whiteboard/application sharing/remote
assistance), Windows Messenger 4.7 must remain installed (although not running).

And that's what I complained about in from the start and have chosen to not
install MSN Messenger 5

Are we likely to ever see convergence of the 2 versions? When? This has gone
way beyond a joke now.

With every new release of Windows Messenger they take more and more
functionality away from Windows Messenger, which leads me to believe they
want us to move to MSN Messenger. This is fine but then make 5 (or 6) a
"true" upgrade/replacement for Windows Messenger! In other words; make MSN
Messenger 5 (or 6) do EVERYTHING Windows messenger does without keeping 4.x
hanging around causing problems and confusion.

Hi Brain,

Up until Windows Messenger 4.7 and MSN Messenger 5, they were converged (for example if you
tried to install MSN Messenger 4.6 on XP, it would install as Windows Messenger 4.6).

MSN Messenger is concentrated towards MSN subscribers and MSN services (like Hotmail, MSN
Mobile, etc.) whereas Windows Messenger is a Messenger client that supports Windows
technologies (Exchange, Real-Time Communications Server, etc.). However both support
Microsoft.NET based technologies, like the .NET Messenger network itself, .NET Alerts, etc.

No one is trying to get you to move to either -- it's your own choice.

So you are saying that to the best of your knowledge MS is for some reason,
technical or philosophical, unable to combine the functionality of both apps
for those of us who "want it all?"

Hi Charles,

You may have to take a trip to Microsoft Way and ask the big man himself *grin*.

Seriously though, by releasing MSN of having to continue to support SIP/Exchange (as well as
some other things), has allowed them to bring up (I know you've seen MSN Messenger 6) MSN
Messenger 6 to basically a new level of instant messaging. Whereas Windows Messenger will
continue down another path and interface, supporting SIP/Exchange, and whatever other Windows
based technologies.

I know several people that have seen the MSN Messenger 6 new interface and features, hate it
with a passion and would prefer to use Windows Messenger 4.x. When you think about it, there
aren't that many products that you can have everything -- for example, the debate over
Outlook not having a newsreader continues with every new version of Office, the lack of
FrontPage in the retail Office suite packages, etc. It's not just software either -- it's
hard to get a motherboard with every feature you'd want, a videocard with every feature you'd
want, or even a car with every feature you'd want (specially the ones with that BMW logo on
the front *grin*).

There's also been that rumor floating around that the entire Windows Messenger/MSN Messenger
split was due to antitrust agreement(s), but I've never seen any proof.

It just seems to me that whatever components that are within Windows
Messenger, that Windows XP needs, could be made available without the rest
of Windows Messenger conflicting and confusing everyone.
