My DVD rom has started to play up.

It has a code 39 error.

When I uninstall it and then reinstall it works fine, but after I reboot it
fails again.

I have looked in the error log and have the following message.

Under source I get
Service Control Manager

and then

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: redbook

some one please help

May not be pertinent in your case, but what do you include when you
"uninstall" it? Are you talking purely a virtual uninstall? If so, try
doing the uninstall, then shut down and power off. Physically
disconnect the IDE cable from both the DVD and the motherboard. Use a
flashlight to check each of the pins at both connector locations, making
certain none are bent. Re-seat the connector firmly on both ends, power
up, and let Plug 'n Play discover and install the unit again.

Also, remember that computers are electroMECHANICAL units. Not
everything is the electro (software, operating system, etc.) aspect.
Simple mechanical failure can and does occur.
