Greetings: I may have posted this question to the wrong usergroup (MSN
Messenger). I am confused about XP Messenger and MSN Messenger. Here is the
problem....again.
Greetings: I am using IM 4.7 (4.7.2009). Within the last few days, one of my
contacts (son) disappeared from my "Contacts" list and was replaced with
"None". When I examine "Properties", his address is listed correctly.
Strangely, "None" will appear as being active in my "On line" screen but
when I try to send a message MSN tells me he does not have a passport or
some other Microsoft useless "bul_s_it".
What has MSN wrought this time.???
Any ideas/help???

Greetings John,
Firstly, just to clarify, on Windows XP, you can run two Messenger clients, Windows Messenger
4 (which comes with XP) or MSN Messenger 5. You're using Windows Messenger 4.7.2009 (there
is no MSN Messenger 4.7).
It's possible that your Messenger's contact list cache has become corrupted. To fix this,
close Messenger (right-click its icon and choose Exit), then open the registry (click Start,
Run, enter "regedit.exe" and click OK), then go to (they look like small folders) My
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Mess engerService. Click the MessengerService
key, then click the small '+' next to it. You'll then see GroupStateCache, and ListCache.
Click GroupStateCache, then go to the Edit menu, and then choose Delete. Say "Yes" to
confirm the operation. Do the same for the ListCache key.
Then restart Windows Messenger (click Start, All Programs, Windows Messenger).

Jonathon......Thanks for your quick reply. I followed your instructions and
the condition remains. My son is still listed as "None", but still has the
correct address. When I attempt to edit or view his profile I get the
following:
"Sorry, we cannot find the person you are looking for.
This person might not have a Public Profile or a Passport. "
Why has his name changed from "John and Brenda" to "None"?
Weird !!!!

Hi John,
Are you sure he didn't setup that name on his own? and can you still communicate with him?
Unless he has a profile setup, you'll see that message. That doesn't mean that his Passport
is gone/broken.

Thanks again for your interest. I have more confusing info....
I can add my son to the list by using , and it appears
in the list exactly as shown. However, when I add him as ,
it appears in the list as "None" and I get the warning described in earlier
postings.
Therefore, I will use the full address. Go figure.
Thanks again, I appreciated your interest and help.
