Weird thing on my XP Pro machine. In Control Panel I have no file
menu, standard tool bar, navigation buttons etc. Just a Window with my
icons displayed.

I don't know what happened to the navigation system (let me move up a
folder etc.)

Can someone advise what may be set to affect this kind of display?

thanks so much!
Jeff

Jeff,

Does this happen in Windows Explorer as well? If so, see www.dougknox.com,
Win XP Utilities, Repair Missing Toolbars in Explorer/IE.

no that's the wierd thing Doug. It's in windows like Control Panel, My
Computer and maybe some other non-explorer windows.

Wonder if it's a bug (virus) and not some "user preference". Check for
viruses but none found

Control Panel, My Computer are Explorer Windows. Try the Repair utility.
At worst, it will reset your toolbars/menu bars to their default settings.
