View Full Version : MSN 6 anyone?

Dave
December 5th 03, 01:56 PM
I got my hands on MSN 6 last nite and I have to say it looks pretty good.
Has a few "new" features and althought it is only BETA, I've had no problems
at all. If anyone has the means to get it, I would recommend it!
Cheers

To be honest, I have ever only used Windows Messenger and found MSN5 to be
redundant. Having said that, I did DL MSN6 and it is what I will be using.
My favorite feature, hmmmmm. This is what I like; change backgrounds, display
a picture, animated emoticons, new sounds, and I especially like the thumbnail
preview for file transfers. Aside from that, I haven't had much of a chance
to play, but it certainly solves my WebTools problem ;) !! I never thought I
would say this, but GOOD job MS! I don't know if it's something I shouldn't
have or not, so for that reason I didn't give the link. MSN6 all the way,
but it's full use is only complimented by your contacts having it aswell. So
I have sent it to about 4-5 people and we all love it.
Cheers

Hi Dave,

If you mean extras you can download, there are some around (I don't know of any particular
sites that have any yet, I don't see any on sites like http://www.mess.be). However, there
are some that aren't in the list that you might not be aware of, see here for a full list:

The strange thing is that MS is only now waking up to all these features,
when Trillian had them a long time ago.

The interface is ugly and the curves are jagged. And no way can it make a
conn. stick like Trillian does.

Will there be a Windows Messenger 5 or 6 soon? Looks like Windows Messenger
is getting way behind.

Yes Windows Messenger 5 is currently in the testing stage. I happen to have
a copy of it, which I'm happy to e-mail you if you'd like it.

Can you tell us a bit about what's new and enhanced? Thanks.

Hey Dilip,
Good point about making the connection stick. If I could ask for one
improvement it would be for FASTER transfers! I have a 4meg connection and
can upload at 80K, but I'm lucky to hit 15-20K thru messenger.

With Windows Messenger 5, you can connect to Session Initiation Protocol
(SIP) services, receive ink, block MSN Alerts and automatically set your
status to busy when programs are made full screen. These are the only new
features that I am aware of, though there may be more.

However, rather disappointingly, it does not support UPnP, which I need in
order to transfer files, and so for me personally, it is no better than
Windows Messenger 4.7. I'm forced to stick with MSN Messenger 5 as this
supports UPnP.

I like "automatically set your status to busy when programs are made full
screen", so that I can play games in peace. :)

Most likely this is due to the person on the other end having a slower
connection.

I transfer to friends with 4 meg connections aswell, which is rated for 500K
downloads. It's messenger that is slow.

Hi Dave,
I use the net on dial-up via a modem and Trillian's connections to the MS's
Messenger service are better than that offered by it's own product. I can
have a download running under an accelerated software [Like DAP - I use
Internet Download Manager] and not be signed out my messenger while I'm
chatting or transferring files. Between Trillian users, transfer of files
is even faster. :-)
