User has an MSN8 account and Windows XP Home. User keeps
getting the following, if not exact, message:
"Windows Messenger has signed me out since I am on MSN
Messenger"
How can this message be eliminated?

Greetings Erik,
To solve this problem, Windows Messenger just needs to be turned off. To do so, have the
user open up the main Messenger window, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck
'Run this program when Windows starts'. This won't stop it from being loaded by some other
application though. As well, it can be disabled further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add
or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in
the components list and click Next >. Note: this is only available if Windows XP Service
Pack 1 is installed -- if it isn't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't
remove Windows Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN Messenger 5
to work properly.
As well, if the user uses Outlook Express, they'll need to close down Outlook Express, and
download/run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg
This will prevent Outlook Express from starting Windows Messenger as well.
Finally, if the user has Norton Antivirus 2003 installed, they'll need to disable the 'MSN
Messenger' (which actually refers to Windows Messenger in XP) protection feature (or else
Windows Messenger will continue to run). To do so, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the
Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open
Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger
and click OK.
