View Full Version : I can't exit from Windows Messenger

I am running Windows Messenger 4.7 with XP. When I right-
click on the messenger icon in the system tray, and
select Exit, I get the following error message:

"There are other applications currently using features
provided by Windows Messenger. You must close these other
applications before you can exit Windows Messenger. These
applications may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN
Explorer, and Internet Explorer."

I do not have MSN Explorer installed, and I have disabled
Instant Messaging in both Outlook and Outlook Express.
Even with Internet Explorer not running (other than the
desktop, of course) I still get this error message!
Obviously, the error is false, since I can use the Task
Manager to blow away Messenger with no ill consequences.

I was hoping there was a more graceful way to exit
Messenger than killing the process! sigh... Any thoughts
anyone?

Much thanks,
Brad

Greetings Brad,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Hi Jaymie,

There are no other applications that I'm aware of besides Norton and the ones listed that
would cause this. You can however, force Messenger to close, go to the Task Manager (hit
Ctrl-Alt-Del or right-click on the taskbar and choose Task Manager), choose the Processes
tab, find msmsgs.exe, click it and then choose End Process.
