I am able to use vid/voice successfully with others, but we've just
set up my niece with XP & Messenger and she can see & hear me and
other users, but we can't see or hear her. I realize the problem is
on her end.

I have XPPro and all current patches and service packs as does my
niece. Both using Messenger 5.

She has a Logitech webcam & mic and can use it fine with the Logitech
software. She is DSL connected thru a 2Wire HomePortal (a DSL adaptor
with built in firewall).

At first, vid&voice wouldn't work at all. I finally figured out that
the HomePortal had a built in firewall. 2Wire's site said we needed
to move her computer to the DMZ. OK, accomplished that and now she
could see and hear me, but I couldn't see or hear her (remember, I can
see & hear others, just not her).

We have run thru the audio tuning wizard in Messenger (both of us),
but still nothing. The Wizard does have the correct webcam & mic
selected on her system. She can see herself in the PIP on Messenger,
so Messenger is obviously picking up the video signal.

I realize this must be something in the 2Wire HomePortal DSL adaptor,
but what? Anyone have experience with the 2Wire HomePortal? She is
600 miles away so it's impossible for me to make a "house call" so I
can peruse the adaptors web interface.

If you move a PC into the DMZ, you shouldn't have to open up any
ports, right?

-Jay

I have posted several comments re. using Messenger with routers. I'm no
expert but have been able to make it happen for our company offices.
However, there are still times the audio and video fail without and logical
reason. SO I use eyeball chat. Eyeball has superior video and useable audio.
Additionally, it seems to work well with fire walls and routers. No white
board or app sharing but far far superior video. Allows high resolution
video streaming when connected to my CamCorder via firewire connection.
Excellent backup to Messenger for audio, video, text and file sharing and it
is FREE. Find it with a search for eyeball.
