View Full Version : WINLOGON : The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

Everyday now usually when I right click on the start button OR
.....while in the explorer righ clicking on a drive letter, my Explorer
session reboots itself. Unfortunately I don't recall what I may have
added or changed since this annoying problem started. After a reboot
this problem will almost always re-occur at some point.

When I look in the Event Viewer:Application, I see this entry which is
shown as non-critical with the (i) status:
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Winlogon:
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

This doesn't bother me too much except several of my apps
which are still running don't return in the systray, making it
impossible to change their settings until I reboot.
Aside from that this may be telling me there is some other problems
lurking in the background just waiting to bite me and make this a
bigger problem.

I have searched all over the Microsoft Technet site and support sites
with no luck.

I am running Windows XP Professional with SP1 and ALL the updates
available from the Microsoft Update site.

Can someone shed some light on this one for me?

Thanks so much for any help !!!

Hi, what ist th event id of the eventlog entry? 1002? I have the same
desciption but the error occurs during opening applikations with a click
on a file (for example test.txt -> notepad, test.doc -> Word)

I'm running Win XP Pro Sp1 and all Patches, I try to use restore points
but this didn't solve the problem. I also checked for a virus, but my
system is OK.

Hi Arnd,

For some users this has to do with Winzip.
