Is there a way to configure a laptop with winXP so that the touchpad does
not do mouse clicks when touched too hard?
I would prefer the touchpad to act only as a pointer and that I have to
click one of the
buttons to actually perform a mouse click.
Please help.

In the settings there is an option where you can do that. I think its under
the mouse setting or your input devide. Check it out.

Go to the control panel and click the Mouse under Device Settings tab click
Settings button and click on Tapping not the + sign next to Tapping and
remove the check mark next to Enable Tapping. Other than Tapping Virtual
Scrolling will also come into play when trying to use the center pad and you
can turn it off also if you wish.
I purchased a wireless USB optical wheel mouse so I don't have to mess with
the Touchpad at all.
Targus makes some that don't have that long cord attached to the USB
connector that are made especially for laptops.
