View Full Version : messenger voice won't work
richard
December 5th 03, 02:00 PM
I have two xp machines networked together behind a
linksys four port router which is configured to support
upnp. One of the computers works fine and the other
connects and acts like it is working but no sound goes
through. If I call from one machine to the other or to
anyone else one works and the other doesn't. The one
that doesn't send sound can receive sound and video and
its speakers and mic check out in the audio tuning
wizard. When you talk the router flashes and the mic
indicator goes up and down with your voice wave but for
some reason no sound is recevied on the other side.

Greetings Richard,
Firstly make sure you've gone through the Audio (and Video) Tuning Wizard recently. To do
so, open up the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then Audio Tuning Wizard and go
through the wizard.
Secondly, this may actually be a problem on your contacts side, since it doesn't appear that
they're receiving your video data. As such, this is for them:
Make sure that the Internet Connection Firewall hasn't turned on, click Start, then
click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and Internet connections
then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet connection, then click
Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that the Internet Connection Firewall is
unchecked. Any other firewall software (like Norton Internet Security, Sygate, etc.) should
have Messenger set to "Permit All", "Allow All", or "Medium" (in ZoneAlarm).
Since you're using a router (UPnP enabled), remove the current port forwardings -- to do so,
click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right-click the
"Internet Gateway" (should be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties.
Choose the Settings button, click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete'
to each one. Then close Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart
Messenger and try a voice/video conversation again.

Ok I have used the audio tuning wizrd and things are fine
with my speakers and mic. In fact I can record things in
sound recorder also no problem. I have removed the port
forwardings as you asked and it did not change anything.
I also made sure that the person I am trying to talk to
had no firewalls running and they don't. They are behind
the same upnp type router as I am. Also, I have a
different messenger account for each of the machines on
my home network and can connect the two machines I have
right here using messenger voice. Messenger tells me
that it is connected and I can talk from one to the other
but not back the other way.

Hi Richard,
Since your contact is using the same router, have them remove their port forwardings and
restart Messenger as well.

Ok had him do that and he restarted. Its still the
same. We have no problem establishing a connection and I
can see them and hear them just fine. As far as I can
see in the router it appears that the upnp port
forwarding is working properly also. They just cannot
hear me. I added a camera and they cannot see me
either. Everything on my end looks like it is working
perfectly, however.
