my friend cancelled ber email account and is trying to
set up a hotmail account but each time tells her type
different email address the portion before @ can contain
letter etc etc. she has tried everything but cant get
sorted please help

Just a pure guess here but since an account was cancelled you can't use the
same name again. It will have to be different in front of the @.
