View Full Version : Making Netscape my browser

On Windsows XP, I downloaded Netscape 7 - 66.7 KB. File
appears on the desktop, but when I try to open it to
install it and call up Communicator 4.x, I get a message
from Windows saying it is not a valid windows file.

I want to make Netscape my browser. How do I do this?

Precisely what file does it say is not a valid windows file? Try the
download and install again.

BTW - Communicator 4.x is the OLDER version of Netscape. Netscape 7 will be
a completely different installation. Unless you also have 4.x installed it
won't be able to find it.

Try downloading the Netscape installer again. Sometimes files get corrupted
through no fault of your own. If the installer isn't working for you, then
download the entire application -- it is many MB large.

BTW - do you want Netscape 7 or Communicator 4.x? The two are completely
different applications, although they share a common heritage.

Visit snews://secnews.netscape.com/netscape.netscape7.windows

The new-generation NetScape browser comes in several 'flavors' - with or
without news, mail and extras.

See http://sillydog.org/narchive for 'streamlined' versions. One is the
Navigator browser only.

There's also a nice 'compact' version at http://WWW.HMETZGER.DE/net7comp.html

And a 'basic' edition at the http://netscape.com

These customized editions are about 13Mb or so - much smaller than the full
install. Do a CUSTOM install, to further reduce what you do not need.

Most of the above have selective image and pop-up rejection, tabbed
browsing, and other features that may make NetScape your browser of choice.

You betcha. Mozilla is up to 1.4b now if you don't mind a little beta
work. It's worth ten times the price just for the spam filtering and
natural virus immunity. As to why n-scape wouldn't download, try it
again if it was corrupted enroute. Check and see if you've prohibited
..exe files from downloading. Sometimes mammasoft can be too protective.
And keep track of just where you're downloading it to. If you're
using the Temp directory, sometimes things just get lost.
