View Full Version : Bootlog in XP

I have been trying to create a BOOTLOG.TXT file in a Windows XP Home PC and
cannot seem to be able to do it. I have opened the MSCONFIG window,
selected the BOOT.INI tab and checked /BOOTLOG. After rebooting, I cannot
find a bootlog.txt file anywhere.

I would also like to do an interactive bootup where I can see each item as
it is loaded and manually proceed to the next item as I could do in Windows
98. Is there a way to do this in Windows XP?

I am trying to help a person with her XP machine with a Stop 0x0000000A
blue screen error. This points to a driver problem. I have done clean
boots and added back each of the SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, BOOT.INI, etc. If
all are unchecked, the problem seems to go away, but it returns
intermittently if I have either SYSTEM.INI and or WIN.INI loading. As a
last resort I wanted to see a Bootlog file I could examine. I can't find
anything in the Knowledge Base about Bootlog in WinXP articles. If XP
doesn't make a BootLog file, what is the /BOOTLOG parameter for anyway?

c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt=20

This only gets created after chkdsk has been run (or could be run). If =
you don't get that far it is stored in the registry (but if you can't =
get that far the reg isn't going to be saved)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ BootLog=20

The Bootlog file is called Ntbtlog.txt and can usually be found in the
C:\Windows folder.
You may want to check out the Event Viewer. This is a nice article that
explains it's uses.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427
It logs startup errors as well.
Dr Watson can also be a life saver. In the middle of this article is a link
to error reporting settings and from there a link to online diagnostics.
Dr Watson and link to error reporting settings.

I should have also asked if you have read this article.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314063
Pretty good breakdown on the Stop 0x0000000A error troubleshooting.
It may be a simple BIOS setting or Flash.

Yes, Billy, I have poured over that article and tried everything there
except for the "Try Repairing The Windows XP Installation" section. I'm
not sure just what that does and at this point I would like to avoid doing
a complete Windows XP reinstallation if possible.

David, thanks for the reply. The only ntbtlog.txt I see is dated back in
February. Are you saying that if I run CHKDSK, the file should be created?
I know I have run the My Computer, Drive C. Properties, Error check more
recently than that. Is CHKDSK different than that process?

For delays before the icons appear on the Desktop use the Bootvis.exe =
tool -the download on the link page which follows:
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/default.asp

Otherwise I would look in Event Viewer at the logged errors.

1. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click =
Administrative Tools, double-click Event Viewer and select System for =
system errors or Application for application errors. Look for Error in =
the Type column and double click on Error to reveal a Description of the =
error. This can be copied by using Clipboard Viewer (see later).
=20
2. Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you =
should double click for further information and you can copy using copy =
and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

3. For some errors you will find "+ Related Knowledge Base Article", =
which if double clicked takes you to the Knowledge Base Article =
containing a suggested solution.

There always seems to be a step 2 but not always a step 3.=20

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports (Step 1). Run Event Viewer and =
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window which appears =
is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close =
Event Viewer. Now start your message ( email )and do a paste into the =
body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer =
Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the =
first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. It can be helpful to place =
a shortcut to Event Viewer on your Desktop.

Hope this helps.
