Anything outgoing (send files, start voice or video or
remote assistance) can not start successfully.
Any fix?
Thanks.

Greetings,

A few things could be causing this. Firstly, make sure you've gone through the Audio (and
Video) Tuning Wizard recently (open the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then
Audio Tuning Wizard).

Secondly, try turning off any firewall you might have engaged, including the Windows XP
Internet Connection Firewall -- click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in
category view click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right
click your network/internet connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and
verify that the Internet Connection Firewall is unchecked.

Thirdly, if you're using a router, in order for voice conversations to be successful, it will
either have built-in support for Messenger voice/video (usually turned on by setting your
computer into the DMZ of the router, see router documentation on how to turn this on) or need
to support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). There may be an update for your router to support
UPnP, look on your router manufacturers website to see if there's an update for your routers
firmware to allow your router to support UPnP. As well, for Remote Assistance to work, your
router will also need to support UPnP. For file transfer, if the router doesn't have support
for Messenger file transfer, but does have support for UPnP, you'll need to use MSN Messenger
5, as it's the only currently released Messenger client with UPnP file transfer support:
http://messenger.msn.com/download/download.asp?client=1.

All of these may be problems on your contacts' side as well, so asking them to do the same as
above my help.

Jonathan:
I have no router, I have a DSL direct connection. I turned
off the firewall, still the problem persists. And I did go
thru the audio wizard, but nothing changes.

Hi,

Another thing to check -- it's possible that
your DSL provider/modem is using NAT to supply your connect. You can check this by looking
at your IP address -- click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then Communications,
then Network Connections. Double-click your Internet connection, and choose the Support tab.
If your IP address begins with a 192, 172, or 10, you may be on a NAT'd connection (either
from your ISP, or a from the DSL modem) and you won't be able to send files/voice/video, etc.
