View Full Version : Unmountable_Bootable_Device Blue Screen

Hi,
I have a pc with a motherboard SOLTEK SL-67EV1 and I am having a blue
screen saying Unmountable_Boot_Device when I install Win XP, and when I try
to install Win 98 another blue screen occurs. Although I tried everything I
could imagine, this screen remained the same even after I formatted the Hard
Drive, removed all possible devices that may conflict and even purchased a
new hard drive!
Does anyone has an idea pls?!!
Thanks in advance

Hi,
See:
"STOP 0x000000ED UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" Error Message [Q297185]

Basically, first you should check the hard drive detection settings in =
the system BIOS. The other most frequent cause is the use of a 40 pin =
cable where an 80 pin cable is required.

Noel;
Power off, open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
If that fails:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q297185&
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315403
Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Hi,
The 80pin cable has the same structure as the 40 pin cable (in other words,
does it fit with the motherboard?)
Thanks Mr. Rick for your response, you gave me hope!!

Hi Noel,
Yes, it will fit, and is required for use with newer drives.

Hi Jupiter,
I've had this problem, too. And I reseated the IDE cable and,
sometimes, have switched from "master" to "slave". This also works. I
just figured I had a questionable ribbon cable and planned to replace it
if I ever get to a point where it bothers me that much. Since you wrote
that suggestion here, I now assume that my cable is ok. Can you explain
why the cable matters so much? Thanks.

Greg;
The explanation is better answered in the first link I gave.
I have found that reseating the cable resolves the issue about 30% of
the time.
Otherwise check to be sure an 80 pin cable is used then follow the
other steps listed.
