Greetings Emily,
If you're using MSN Messenger 5, you can remove this in the Add or Remove Programs in the
Control Panel. Just click Start, then Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs, click MSN
Messenger 5 and then click Remove.
If you mean Windows Messenger, close down Messenger (right click the messenger icon in the
notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then click Run
and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

you are a star.
I hope that this will now stop unsolcited explicit
instant messages that I have received from websites that
have obviously locked on to my computer id ?
will it ?

If you're talking about spam sent through Windows/MSN Messenger, then yes.
But if (and it is more likely) you're talking about pop-up boxes that say "Messenger Service", then
no... that's a separate problem not related to MSN/Windows Messenger and there are thousands of
posts here about how to deal with it. (ie. disable Messenger service or install a firewall)

Hi Jack,
If you mean the messages with "Messenger Service" in their titlebar, actually it won't. To
get rid of those, you'll need to disable the "Messenger Service", click Start, then Run,
enter "services.msc"and click OK. Scroll down to "Messenger", select it, right-click and then
choose Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then choose the 'Stop' button.
After the service is stopped, click OK. Nothing in Windows or any real third-party
applications should be effected by this.
